Two manufacturing facilities have begun construction in Broussard. These facilities are being
built by SafeSource Direct, with the focus on making PPE (personal protection equipment). This
is in response to the shortage of PPE the country faced at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor John Bel Edwards had this to say about SafeSource Direct’s plan:
“A year ago, states across the union were grappling with a shortage of personal protective
equipment as the Coronavirus spread. Even now, the need for PPE is great and that demand will
continue for the foreseeable future. I am proud to say that, with this new project, Louisiana will
play a key role in preventing the U.S. from facing such a shortage again.”
This project is expected to bring about 2,200 jobs between the two facilities. There are plans for
a Lafayette Parish facility that will act as the company’s headquarters and a St. Martin Parish
facility that will specialize in nitrile rubber gloves. Both locations will have a Broussard
manufacturing facility associated with them. Construction is currently in progress and is
expected to be fully finished and staffed by the end of 2023.
