Census response is crucial to the future here in Broussard. The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. Think of your morning commute: Census results influence highway planning and construction, as well as grants for buses and other public transit systems. Or think of your local schools: Census results help determine how money is allocated for the Head Start program and for grants that support teachers and special education. The list goes on, including programs to support rural areas, to restore wildlife, to prevent child abuse, to prepare for natural disasters, and to provide housing assistance for older adults. We have a little over 2 months left for people to self respond without having a Census taker knock on their door. Census takers will begin working on August 11th. Congress extended Census response time due to COVID19, so we will be accepting responses through October 31st. The Census also just resumed operations in the field to hand-deliver questionnaires to people who received mail at a Post Office Box. This should help increase response rates, especially in more rural areas of the parish.
